Description |
Technical Sergeant Enrico Carnicelli was attached to the United States Army Air Corp during World War II. He was a member of an eleven man crew aboard a B-29 photographic and mapping mission over Northern China. On February 2, 1945 one of the engines stopped, then the propeller on the other engine disengaged and sheared off the second propeller. With one engine flamming and the other demolished, the crew bailed out. They were then in the hands of Chinese guerrillas who led them on a 1,000 mile trek back to their own lines. The Chinese handed them a captured Japanese camera which recorded their 3 month walk out. After the war Carnicelli was employed as a clerk at the Port Authority Bus Terminal. In 1946 he joined the Air Force Association and later served as Commander of the New Jersey Wings. Carnicelli lived at 204 Highwood Avenue in Leonia. Archivist's Note: Contained within the military archive is a 30 page transcription taken from a diary kept by the pilot along with photographs. (original photo held by the Carnicelli Family) |
