Description |
Artist, teacher and academician of the National Academy of Design, Charles Chapman was born in Morristown, New York in 1879. Along with Harvey Dunn, he founded the Leonia School of Illustration in 1914 located in the former Moore homestead on Grand Avenue. Chapman taught at the Art Students League in New York and was also a book illustrator. In the 1930s he was commissioned by the Museum of Natural History to paint a 30 foot mural of the Grand Canyon. His paintings are in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York,and other museums in Cleveland and Washington, D.C. His lithographs are in the collections of the New York Public Library and the Library of Congress. Here in Leonia Chapman's murals may be seen at the Methodist Church. Three of his paintings and a charcoal drawing are in the collection of the Leonia Public Library. The Chapmans built a house on Sylvan Avenue in 1911 with a large studio on the second floor. The Library owns five of his works. |
