The rustic setting appealed to city children and some of the boarding pupils came from New York City theatrical families. The school flourished during the World War I period. Noyes earned a Bachelor's degree from Teachers College, Columbia University and had taught in South Orange for three years. After receiving her Master's degree in Education she established the Old Orchard School which thrived for 15 years.
