Recipient of the 1934 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, Harold Urey played a significant role in the development of the atomic bomb. Born in Indiana, he earned a Ph.D. in Chemistry at the University of California, Berkeley. It was in the 1950s while at the University of Chicago that Urey's interests turned to the chemistry of the planets. The experiment that he conducted there had enormous influence in subsequent research on the origin of life. Urey came to Leonia in 1930 when he joined the Columbia University chemistry faculty. His house on the corner of Highwood and Glenwood Avenues was built with his Nobel Prize money. In 1934, the year he was awarded the Nobel Prize, Urey served on the Leonia Board of Education. |
